My favorite attraction in Las Vegas is the Fremont Street Experience (FSE).

I saw this once before soon after it opened in '96...it still gives me goose bumps.

Fremont Street is located downtown, away from the The Strip. It has a very different vibe than the The Strip...it is more intimate and classic. The FSE is a canopy that runs for 5 blocks down Fremont St. The canopy is a ginormous video screen that shows amazing 10 minute videos after sunset on the hour until midnight. We caught two shows: American Pie and Tribute to Queen.

I love how all the casino lights go out just before the show starts.

The sound system rocks, with speakers everywhere that allow the sound to follow the images across the screen.

A short 30 minute drive from Las Vegas is Hoover Dam, probably best known as the structure built to contain Megatron.

We drove out to the dam and I walked across it. It is amazing and worth the trip.

DFW Exposed has started posting photos from their "Heaven and Helloween VI" party. All three of my submitted photos were posted. I found the photo to the left, which is not from my camera, in the photo gallery.

Some of the pictures are a bit racy or tasteless, so you probably should not look at these at work.

This year I decided to go as Borat. If you have not seen Borat, check out this clip of Borat using a dating service.

Here are photos from Halloween.

I got a fake mustache, spirit gum, and remover from Norcostco (great place to get stuff for Halloween and the staff is very helpful). They recommended I try a place called "Gratitude" for the signature gray suit.

Gratitude is a *very* odd place. It doesn't have a web presence, so here are its vitals: 3714 Fairmount, Dallas, TX 75219; 214-522-2921. It is an old house *stuffed* with old clothing and accessories. I told them I called earlier about a gray suit. The guy said he had a few to show me. He said to follow him and he lost me in a matter of foot steps...the room I was in was sooo packed with clothing that you could not find any doors. I had to yell for help to try to find out which way my guide went.

I found the perfect gray suit there. I also picked up a wig, an American Flag lapel pin, sunglasses, and a shirt for $80. I ended up not using to the wig because it was just too big.

I bought a gold tie previously.

That gave me the costume, but I wanted one more accessory: photos of my wife (see 4:40 in this video). I used Google images to find pictures of my wife.

The first party I went to was hosted by my buddy Matt. It got interesting when a bisexual girl started making out with another guy's girlfriend. The boyfriend got upset and the party started to feel a bit like a Jerry Springer show. I was looking for the right moment to jet to my next party, so I slipped out in the middle of the confrontation of the boyfriend with his now lesbian girlfriend.

The next party I went to was "Heaven and Helloween VI" hosted by DFW Exposed. I went last year and had a blast. The place was packed with at least a thousand people and most people dressed up. It cost $40 to get in, but it had an open bar.

Going as Borat was great. I used a lot of his tendencies...

• I would say, "I like you" to almost every girl that walked by.
• I got to kiss a bunch of girls, because that is how we greet people in Kazakhstan
• I was giving High-Five's all night
• When people asked me about my wife, I would show them the photos. Most people thought they were hilarious, but one girl got really offended.
• When girls recognized me as Borat, I would try to guess their costume. In every case, I would guess "Prostitute?" Most girls thought that was funny, but I did get slapped pretty hard in the face once.

When I was in high school, I used to call in for radio contests from K98 in Austin. I spent a lot of time doing homework and listening to the radio. They gave away something every hour. Since I spent at least 3 hours a night on homework, I usually got at least 3 attempts to win.

I ended up winning...a lot. I got in a competition with my high school buddy Chris Lowe. I finished with just over 100 wins at the end of high school, but Chris beat me by a few (lucky bastard!).

There was one night where I won three consecutive giveaways.

At school, people would ask me to win them tickets to an upcoming concerts...and sometimes I actually did it.

K98 had a policy where you could only win once a month. I won so many times that the DJ's started to recognize me. To keep winning, I started giving out names of family and friends.

Most of the stuff I won was crap, but I did win a few good things. The best was this time when I won front row tickets and backstage passes for the Poison/David Lee Roth concert for naming a small sample from a song. I took my brother for his birthday. After they pried the groupies off of the band, they got together to take a picture with us. The girl next to me was our K98 host for the concert. 

Another time I won $300 for naming the last 3 songs played.

I took some pictures of my TV showing Monday Night Football in HD. My digital camera takes pictures at 2592x1944. ESPN is broadcasting MNF in 720p (1280x720). As detailed as these pictures are, a 1080 broadcast would show even more. I took the pictures about 4 feet from the TV.

Check out how much you can zoom in before the image gets pixelated and the clarity of the text. Click on the pics below to see the full resolution versions.

Today's leg of MTTS traveled from downtown Dallas (2 blocks from my apartment!) to Memphis. We all gathered in a large parking lot at 8am and left around 8:30am.

I picked up a cool MTTS shirt...although it certainly is not $36 cool.

Wired provided a bus with free WiFi access. I'm not sure how accurate their tally (see picture) was, but they did update it frequently.

I got in a convoy with 3 other MINI's. Alas, it was not meant to be. After only 30 minutes of motoring, the cops pulled over our leader. One of the other cars pulled over and waited. That left me and one other MINI. Not much of a convoy...so I drove slow and waited for another group.

The next group had 4 MINI's in it. One of them was Gary from MC2 Magazine. We stopped at a gas station and took some pictures of our cars. 4 of the 5 MINI's were red, so we lined them up for some photos.

Once we got back on the road, we hooked up with another 4 MINI's to get our convoy to 9. The first official stop was just after the Texas/Arkansas border. One of the red MINI owners (Toby) said he was turning around at this point and heading back. I decided to join him. We had our own 2 car convoy back to Dallas.

MINI Takes The States (MTTS) is a two week trip setup by MINI starting on the West Coast and ending on the East Coast. It would have been a blast to do the whole thing, but I am out of vacation days for the year. I drove to Wichita Falls to meet up with the inbound MINI's and drove to Dallas with them. I met up with my co-worker Steve Baker at a Wendy's in Wichita Falls. We stopped once at a MINI rest stop that provided free ice cream. Once I got to Dallas, I went to get a free car wash, courtesy of MINI. I had dinner at Razoo's with the Metroplex MINI clan. Then I went to the Gypsy Tea Room for a MINI private party featuring free drinks and a couple of comedians and a couple of bands.

If you click on the Amarillo to Dallas leg of MTTS, and then go to "Details & Photos", then click on "Photos", then go to the 14th picture down, you can see a picture of me on the MINI website! I am the only guy with a red shirt sitting up near the front row with comedian Jay Davis on stage. Appearance on MINI website: check!

Here are a few panoramic pics I created with Adobe PhotoShop from last weekend's MINI Takes The States (MTTS). The pic above was after we left Dallas for Memphis. I joined a convoy of 9 MINI's that had several red MINI's. The next time we stopped, we lined up for a red MINI photo op. My car is the one with the number 11 on the side.

Saturday night, MTTS took over the Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum. The parking lot was overflowing with MINI's. I tried to take one 360 degree panoramic pic...but the distortion became too great, so I split it into 3 pictures. Doing a 360 degree panoramic photo would be easier if I had the right tool for the job, like this Sony panoramic camera.

Today I drove to Wichita Falls to meet up with the MINI Takes the States (MTTS) convoy. I was meeting my fellow MINI owner/buddy Steve and his kid Oliver who left with the MTTS convoy out of Amarillo.

We wanted to meet up for a quick lunch so that we could get back on the road. I found a Wendy's with several MINI's parked in front. I called Steve and told him where to meet me and then I went inside to talk to the MINI owners.

It is easy to find people involved in the MTTS...everybody that registered has a red band on their wrists. I found a table of four people with the red bands on their wrists.

MINI owners are abnormally enthusiastic about their cars. Striking up a conversation is *not* a problem...just ask them about their cars and they won't stop talking.

I walked over to talk to the group with the red wrist bands to say howdy. I asked them if they were involved in MTTS. The response I got was a bit like "Flounder" in Animal House when he asked, "You guys playing cards?"...stares and dead silence. It felt like they were expecting me to ask for money or something.

One girl in the group spoke up after bit and told me they were from New Jersey and they were doing the whole trip, from the West Coast to the East Coast. I said, "You guys are hardcore!" and I left them alone.

Later that night, MINI hosted a party at the Gypsy Tea Room in Deep Ellum in Dallas. After a couple of comedians performed, some of the people behind MINI took the stage to welcome and thank everybody. One of the people that took the stage was Trudy Hardy, the marketing manager for MINI USA. Trudy was the girl I tried to talk to at lunch! Here is an interview Trudy did recently with BusinessWeek.

I *had* to confront Trudy about our awkward lunch time chat. I found her mingling in the crowd. I said, "you were the girl at Wendy's!" She smiled and said, "Yeah, I try to keep a low profile." It worked! I had no idea who she was until she was introduced on stage. That explains why these MINI owners at lunch weren't acting like MINI owners...they were trying to play it cool (although it came off as despondent...need to work on that guys!)

I asked Trudy if I could get a photo with her and she obliged me. Thanks Trudy...you are awesome!

I have a *bunch* more photos to put up from the event. Tomorrow we ship off for Memphis at 8am. Off to bed!

If you are going to do one thing when you visit Boston, what should it be? Apparently you go to a Red Sox game.

Baseball is...how should I put it...not my thing. I work next to Ameriquest Field and I haven't been to a Rangers game in at least 2 years. I have probably been to 5 MLB games my entire life.

That said, visiting Fenway Park is special. There is a personality there that comes with years of history.

My buddy John Verostek got us some SRO tickets. That means we had to stand and watch from the back, right? WRONG! We spent most of the time exploring and checking out every angle of the park (as my photos will attest).

The game was actually interesting for a non-baseball fan. The 9th inning was electric as the crowd tried to help get the tying run. Unfortunately it wasn't going to happen. The Red Sox lost in the end to the Cleveland Indians 6-7. Even though they lost, I was mucho impressed with Fenway Park, the Red Sox, and the Boston Fans. I'm glad I got to see it.

While I was waiting to get my Walking Teapot swag from Pixar, I saw a computer graphics living legend....Edwin Catmull. Ed is the president of Pixar. He is responsible for several important innovations in computer graphics:

• The Z-buffer
• Texture Mapping
• Motion Blur
• Created RenderMan
• The Catmull-Rom Spline
• Subdivision Surfaces
• Anti-Aliasing Techniques

An interesting bit of trivia about Ed...he created the first 3D computer generated graphics in a film. A digitized version of Ed's left hand is used in the 1976 film Futureworld.

Here are a couple of panoramic views of the show floor. The top pic is the view from the main entrance. The bottom is taken from the opposite side. Click on the photos to see all the detail (6k x 1.5k).

Google had a booth for the first time. They were showing off Google Earth and SketchUp. Microsoft had a tiny booth (big enough for 2 computer displays) to let people try out Vista and talk to their engineers. Intel, Apple and Dell were noticeably absent. Alias was sort of missing...they were bought by Autodesk. I would have thought Autodesk would have doubled the size of its booth and had dedicated stages for Maya and Max. Instead, they had a single large booth...about the same size as last year *before* they bought Alias. They had one stage that alternated between Max and Maya demos. The booth focused on the name "Autodesk"...no Maya or Max logos to be found. In fact, if you didn't know that Autodesk owns Max or Maya, you could easily have missed them at the show...which *never* would have happened in the past.

I made these these panoramic photos with my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-T33. I took three overlapping photos and fed them to image stitching software. When you make these, you should err on the side of using more overlap...like a third of the photo should be shared with the previous photo. That helps the stitching software line up the photos correctly. I used both Microsoft's Digital Imaging Suite 2006 and Adobe's Photoshop Elements 4.0. Microsoft's gives better results with almost no user interaction. Adobe's gives you more control, so you can line up pictures that Microsoft refuses to stitch together. For future photos, I'll probably use Microsoft's first, and if I have problems then use Adobe's.

My old high school buddy Chris Franka flew in to hang out for the weekend. Our first stop for happy hour was the new Ghostbar on the 32nd floor of the W Dallas-Victory. The elevator says it is the 33rd floor, but it skips floor 13, just to be safe. Ghostbar has been open for only 3 weeks.

I took pictures and video with my Motorola Q. Let's just say it is a better phone than a camera. Here are the photos. Here is a video from the south balcony, which has an outdoor bar. Here is a video from the north balcony, which has a see-through glass floor.

We got in just before 7 and did not have to pay a cover. For Friday's and Saturday's after happy hour, cover is $20 for guys...girls get in free. For happy hour, ghostbar is just a bar/lounge. Later on a DJ plays music and it becomes a dance club.

The first thing I noticed when I got off the elevator were the waitresses. They are all very tall (most around 6 foot with their heels), very thin, very cute, and dressed in sexy outfits with fishnet stockings. Here is a photo of one of our waitresses.

Ghostbar is one large room with a bar on the west side and couches and chairs throughout. It has a lot of style and attention to detail. Very cool design.

We headed out to the south balcony to see the view. It is amazing, but it got to me a bit. I *love* observation decks in tall buildings, but they scare the *hell* out of me. I could feel the building shake a bit...but I found the more I drank, the less I noticed. We sat at some bar stools right by the glass window on the balcony. The window has a glass bar on it so you can take in the view and enjoy a tasty overpriced beverage. My rum/diet coke was $10 after tip! The window is not connected to anything above, so you really are outside. Besides the bar stools by the edge, there are also some couches and tables that are on the balcony but closer to the building.

The north balcony is much smaller, but it has a see-through floor! That is such a bizarre feeling to be able to see cars driving 32 floors beneath your feet! It took me a while before I could be comfortable out there...but it was worth it. Definitely a thrill.

I ran into one of my friends that works at Ghostbar. He was nice enough to take us to the "VIP" area. The VIP area is just a small corner in the north part of the bar that is sectioned off with a curtain and a private bar and waitstaff. Next, he took us around to meet all the really cute waitresses. Why can't all my friends be this cool?!?!

We left Ghostbar to check out some other places. We planned on coming back to see what it was like later in the evening. We returned at 1:30am, but they had stopped letting people enter because Ghostbar had reached its maximum occupancy of 450.

In summary...way cool bar! I'll put Ghostbar in my regular rotation. Two acrophobic thumbs up!

Here are the photos I took over the weekend for the Abraham Family Reunion in New Ulm, Minnesota.

Friday, we meet for dinner and a slide show at the Kaiserhof. Saturday we had a picnic at Hermann Heights park and then did a bus tour of New Ulm that ended at the Schell Brewery. Saturday night we crashed a wedding party at George's. The wedding party was lame, so we went to a new bar that had recently opened. Sunday was church and relaxation. Late Sunday we went to the Lamp Lighter sports bar for dinner. I stayed with Bob and watched the Mavs lose Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Monday we left early to catch our planes home.

Senior Bob did a great job setting this up. Thanks Bob!

The Mavs won a decisive game 2, 99-85. I sat behind the Heat, about 20 rows up. Here are some pictures from the big show. I got a few pics of Dr Phil sitting in front of me in about the 2nd row. I also got some pics of Terrell Owens after the game wearing a Mavs Jersey with his name ("T.O.") and number ("81").

This guy is interesting. If you've ever watched basketball on TV, you have seen him. I *thought* I knew him because I always see him sitting in the front row at Mavs games. He isn't a Mavs season ticket holder! He isn't even from Dallas! He is from Los Angeles! He has front row season tickets to the Lakers *AND* the Clippers! He goes to about 120 games a year across the entire NBA. He says he is a basketball fan and not tied to a particular team (I thought that is what we called "jumping on the bandwagon")

His name is James Goldstein. He *is* the NBA's superfan. Read more about him on his web site.

I looked to my left and saw a very large, muscular black man wearing a Heat jersey and a Mavs cap. He was walking down the stairs to his seats on the floor. It was Terrell Owens, Dallas newest train wreck wide receiver. He spent a good deal of time explaining to fans why he was wearing a Shaq jersey instead of supporting the Mavs. The arena was obviously not impressed. I already don't like the guy, and it is clear to me it is only going to get worse. At this point we can only hope he gets a career ending injury in a game...preferably by his fellow teammates in preseason.

On the way home from the game I noticed they had turned on green and blue lights at the top of the W hotel. That is a new one...I hadn't seen lights on the W before. My pictures of it sucked, but I found some good pictures of it online (green and blue).

Last night the Mavs beat the Suns 117-101 to take a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference Finals. The picture is from my seats on the Platinum level (section 215, Row H, seat 11). The seats had a face value of $147. I was sitting in front of one of the red white and blue half circle decorations you can see encircling the arena (you may have to click on the picture above to see them).

Dirk hit a career playoff high 50 points. The only other person to score 50 in the playoffs this year is Kobe Bryant. I'm glad the rest of the country is finally getting to see what Dallas has seen for the last 8 years...Dirk is a bad *ss mother f*ck*r!

When I walked into the arena, I saw Boogey Bob explaining to some lady how famous he is (I've tried that too with limited success). I noticed Boogey Bob has added a photo he took of us together at the Spurs playoff game a couple of weeks ago to his web site. I don't know what the crap is that Boogey Bob stuck on his face...he's Boogey Bob, let's just leave it at that. Now I don't know how you measure fame, but being on Boogey Bob's web site has to be some kind of indicator in that general direction. The two of us are very different people, brought together by our tenacious desire to dance.

They had a few new videos at the arena. The best was "Court Wars: Round III - Revenge of the Dirk" which was a spoof of "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith." The video had the look of "Raiders of the Lost Trophy" with just the faces being replaced. The scene was the final battle between Obi-Wan (played by Dirk Nowitzki) and Anakin (played by former Mav and best friend Steve Nash). "You were the chosen one!" "We were going to rule the NBA together!" Dirk made several comments about Steve's bad hair. Very funny!

They had some updates to videos from round 2. The "Manu Flop" was changed into the "Raja Flop." The "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Spurs Fans" is now, wait for it, "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Suns Fans."

They had a Simpson's intro using Mavericks personalities. They also had a song parody based on the Beatles "Here Comes the Sun."

I saw this Mav's Southpark intro in Round 2. Props to my brother for finding it online.

I just got home from the game tonight! What a fun game. The Mavs started strong, but San Antonio slowly crept back into the game and took the lead in the 4th. It was back and forth for the last 8 minutes. With 6 minutes to go, everybody was standing and never sat down again...I've never seen that happen before at a Mavs game. It was an electric evening! We ended up winning by a single point. That puts the Mavs up 2-1 in this round 2 series.

I had *great* seats! I was sitting in Section 104, G 5, about 10 rows away from the action. These tickets cost $126. Sitting just in front of me were NFL quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Peyton Manning. I got a better shot of Troy when he took a break at half time.

The Mavs had several new videos that were pretty good. One was a music video called "He Did The Flop" to the tune of the Monster Mash. It was about Manu Ginobili always pretending to get knocked down.

Another one had the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indy tries to get the gold idol...only they replaced some of the important parts of the scene with Maverick related content. Coach Avery Johnson was Indiana Jones. The idol was an NBA Championship Trophy. And the guy that asked Indy to throw him the idol in exchange for the whip was played by Charles Barkley. The big boulder that chases Indiana out of the cave was replaced by a large basketball. Well done! UPDATE! Found it here.

The also did a South Park intro spoof featuring characters from the Mavericks.

The last memorable video was a computer generated animation. It featured Dirk as a singing cowboy. The song: "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Spurs Fans", to the tune of Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys.

After the game, I went down to the Old #7 Club to celebrate. And guess who I ran into? Boogey Bob. He was nice enough to take a photo with me. If you have never heard of Boogey Bob or just want to see Boogey Bob do his thing, check out this interview.

Fun night! This is the best Maverick team we have ever had...we are going all the way this year!

This past Thursday, my buddy Jason and I went to the Mavericks vs. Golden State Warrior game. Golden State is one of the worst teams in the league, yet they found a way to win at the buzzer overcoming a 6 point deficit in the final 30 seconds. OUCH! That hurt! But at least we got on TV! We had great seats near the floor, about 10 rows up, and we showed up in the shot of Dirk celebrating after he hits his 50th point in the game. Dirk went on to score 51 in regulation...the highest number of points scored in regulation by a Maverick in the history of the organization. See the video clip here.

I went as Bad Santa again…which I think may be the best costume of all time.  I went to a Halloween Party setup by DFW Exposed.  Awesome party with lots of people and great costumes.  See more photos from the party here.

Here are some pics from a driving class I took back in December of 2003.  The class is called “Practical Driver Improvement for Civilians.” It was such a blast! It is taught by police officers using the same course used to train police. The course is just outside of Kilgore, Texas. About 90% of the class is spent in your car.  The 2 day course only cost $75, which is a steal! You also can get a discount from your insurance for taking the class.

The class has 6 lessons:

• Evasive Lane Change accident avoidance
• Perception / Reaction Emergency Lane Changes for accident avoidance
• Evasive Maneuvering for Accident Avoidance (”serpentine” course)
• Precision Maneuvering Courses
• Precision Backing Courses
• Highway Response Courses

It is a lot of fun to learn what your car can and, more importantly, cannot do. You are not learning anything unless your car looses control!

Here are some pics from a live television broadcast of the “Big Movie Show” from Robb & Stucky on March 13, 2003.  Oscar movie show featured host Gary Cogill, WFAA movie critic.  Guest was Burton Gilliam from Blazing Saddles and Honeymoon in Vegas (”We’re the Flying Elvis’s, Utah Chapter”).
