SIGGRAPH: My Cuz Made the E.T.!

Filed under 3D, Animation, Family, SIGGRAPH

I went to the SIGGRAPH E.T. tonight. E.T. once stood for “Electronic Theater,” but now stands for “Evening Theater.”

The E.T. shows the very best in computer graphics from the past year. It is a great honor to be selected.

I was thrilled to see my cousin’s (Anne Johnson) music video is part of this year’s E.T.! I had no idea it was going to be included.

It is a really funky video…must see material.

See Gnarls Barkley’s “Who’s Gonna Save My Soul” here.

Congrats Cuz!

This stuff cracks me up. You *have* to check out the ManBabies website.

ManBabies inspired me this weekend.

Here is my first attempt, from the movie "The Hangover"...

David Lenihan

Next up, I dug through some family photos...

sean and liam manbabies

I submitted both of these to ManBabies...we'll see if they get picked up.

I used Photoshop CS3 to do these.

Star Wars Convention

Filed under Celebrity, Events, Family, Movies

I went to my first Star Wars convention this weekend...Star Wars Celebration IV.

This convention celebrates the 30th anniversary of the original release of Star Wars on May 25th, 1977.

As a Lucasfilm employee, I got a 40% discount on our tickets...with single day tickets costing $45 without the discount.

Here is the schedule for Saturday.

It was held in the Los Angeles Convention Center over 5 days. I brought my cousins Anne and Michael with me and forced them to wear Star Wars shirts.

I used to think *I* was a big nerd...but not anymore! I seem quite normal in comparison to the people at the convention.

I took a bunch of pictures...check 'em out here.

First Visitors

I had my first visitors to San Francisco last weekend: my Dad and Rosie.

They came in on Saturday morning and left on Tuesday morning.

On Saturday, we had lunch at Mel's Diner, which was attached to their hotel, The Opal. Mel's was featured in American Graffiti...it has a bit of a toned-down cheesy-Planet Hollywood feel, but the food is OK.

After lunch, we walked around the Marina where I live. We walked to the Presidio and saw the Letterman Digital Arts Center, where I work. Then we headed to the Exploratorium.

I had never been to the Exploratorium before. It is amazing! It reminds me of the Emerging Technologies/Art Exhibit at SIGGRAPH, only about 10 times bigger. We only had about an hour an a half to explore, and that wasn't enough...definitely plan on going back to this place.

For dinner, we had good steaks, slow service at Izzy's in the Marina.

On Sunday, we drove down the crooked Lombard Street (my first time seeing it).

Then we headed across Golden Gate bridge to visit Muir Woods...one of my favorite destinations.

Next, we took in a great view of the city from Conzelman Road, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Even though I know he didn't want to, Dad was a good sport and had sushi with me and Rosie for dinner. On Sunday night, the two sushi places I knew were closed, so we went to Ace Wasabi's Rock-n-Roll Sushi. I don't think either of them had sushi before. They seemed to enjoy it...or maybe it was the large amounts of Sake consumed...either way it was a good time.

On Monday, I had to go back to work. Dad and Rosie met me for lunch at ILM. I had no problem getting them in. I took them around the buildings, showed them several movie props and matte background paintings used in movies. We ate in the cafeteria and then went to the company store to get some ILM/LucasFilm shirts. I took them around where I worked and showed them the concept art for the Star Wars game that covers our hallways.

Pictures of our weekend are here.

Thanks Dad and Rosie for the visit!

Abraham Family Reunion

Here is the family tree of the descendents of Carl Abraham.

Here are the photos I took over the weekend for the Abraham Family Reunion in New Ulm, Minnesota.

Friday, we meet for dinner and a slide show at the Kaiserhof. Saturday we had a picnic at Hermann Heights park and then did a bus tour of New Ulm that ended at the Schell Brewery. Saturday night we crashed a wedding party at George's. The wedding party was lame, so we went to a new bar that had recently opened. Sunday was church and relaxation. Late Sunday we went to the Lamp Lighter sports bar for dinner. I stayed with Bob and watched the Mavs lose Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Monday we left early to catch our planes home.

Senior Bob did a great job setting this up. Thanks Bob!

My Family's Home Pages

For Christmas 2000, I thought it would be a nice gift to give my family their own domains. I wanted my family to actually set up their own home pages, but I knew they probably would not. So I decided to give them a little incentive...I setup *very* annoying home pages for each of them based on the internet classic hamster dance.

Here are the original home pages, safely archived on my web site:
Of the original 4 web sites I setup, only my Dad's is still running. My brother has kept his domain, but removed the "bro dance" home page. My Mom and Joe both let their domains expire and no longer own them.
